Canon is known for their quality products, vibrant images, and timely release of new products. They have surprised consumers; however, with the early release of the EOS 50D. This new release is a huge improvement on the EOS 40D, which was only released 12 months ago. Even though that model worked nicely, and produced high quality, a few improvements needed to be made.
Like most Canon cameras, the EOS 50D is for higher end photographers, not beginners. The functions and features, on the 50D, would go to waste with the type of photography done by amateurs and beginners. This is not to say they cannot use the camera, it just might be a bit overwhelming and expensive for their needs.
Its 15.1-megapixel CMOS sensor greatly improves upon the range of ISO settings. ISO settings, on the EOS 50D range from 100 to 3,200. With added features and ISO presets, consumers can expand ISO up to 6,400 or even 12,800.
Some features present in the 50D that were nonexistent in the 40D, are vignette correction, Automatic Lighting Optimizer with three levels, adjustable noise reduction, a Creative Auto mode, a lens micro adjustment function, and face detection autofocus in Live View mode.
The Canon also includes features such as 6.3fps continuous shooting, DIGIC 4 processor, 9-point wide area AF, EOS Integrated Cleaning System, HDMI connectivity, and full compatibility with EF, EF-S, and EX-series Speedlites lenses. Overall performance, on the 50D, is amazing with the integration of the DIGIC 4 processor. This technology also increases the overall resolution of images.
The EOS 50D has a 3.0″ VGA LCD display that incorporates Live View mode and Face Detection Live AF. These features provide an immediate, realistic preview of every scene. It also has a 160-degree viewing angle, which makes editing, viewing, and reviewing a simple process for photographers. Additionally, Canon painted protective coating over the display, which helps eliminate fingerprints, dirt, scratches, and helps to prevent glare.
With measurements of 5.7 x 4.2 x 2.9-inches, and weighing in just under two pounds, the EOS 50D fits comfortably in your hands. Buttons, menus, and different functions are easily accessible with its ergonomic design. (The weight will vary based on the lens that you have attached to the camera; weight shown here is with no lens attached.)
The Canon EOS 50D sells for around $1,399 depending what discounts you can find. This price is for the camera and basic accessories only. Kits, or packages, are available, at a higher price, with different lenses as well.
Canons EOS 50D is very similar to the 40D. If you have had any experience with the 40D, handling the 50D will almost feel like the same camera. With the exception of additional features and more advanced technology integration. Otherwise, the overall design, build, and output are of the utmost quality. Photographers alike can capture true-color realistic pictures every time they click the shutter button.
